Internet Calls: Voip technology for cheap calling

Posted by Asif Thursday, September 30, 2010 0 comments

For those who may not be aware, the latest technology to revolutionize the world of communication is VOIP (Voice over Internet Protocol). Internet calls based on VoIP are routed over the IP networks and users can avail a host of value-added features without having to spend much. With the ushering in of a free market economy and large scale liberalization, communication has become increasing critical.

Today, people are required to make far too many calls to people within their own country and in countries across the globe. Calling over Internet has proved to be the best solution to avoid exorbitant monthly telephone bills, as Internet calls can save up to 40 to 60 percent when compared with PSTN services.

The voice over or IP or Internet telephony solutions is steadily gained in popularity as all those who were worried about bills and limiting their calls are now frequently making long-distance and international calls for free or by paying very less. The reasons behind this upsurge in Internet telephony is both for its low cost and easy use. As calls over the Internet drastically reduces the communication expenses, many individuals and business enterprises are opting for this system worldwide.

To make Internet calls one needs a high speed Internet connection, a computer, a sound card, speakers, head set with a microphone and special software used for setting up an Internet phone connection. However, if you want, the service provider of VoIP will provide you an adapter which will be connected to the traditional telephone or the broadband modem and it will be turned into a VoIP phone.

To make calls using VOIP technology, the headphones are plugged into the computer and both the caller and called parties need to be present online at the same time. Popularity of making calls over Internet has led many users to switch to VoIP services. If you are interested in trying VoIP, then you should check out some of the free VoIP software available on the Internet. You should be able to download and set it up in about three to five minutes. The reasons for people opting for Internet telephony are many:

1. The users can make international calls free or paying very little - leading to a significant saving in their monthly telephone bills. It is reported that by switching over to Internet telephony, the users can save around 40 to 60 percent each month on their phone bill.

2. When using VOIP technology, if you are making calls PC to PC, it will be completely free of cost whereas while making calls to landlines or mobiles, it will entail some low cost.

3. Because of this advanced technology, the users can share the data, video, images and text with their recipients. The Internet calling provides unified communication with others as it is backed with packet switching technique.

4. Unlike traditional PSTN services, the Internet telephony offers value added calling features including voice mail, caller ID, call conferencing, call waiting and call forwarding.

5. The service providers offer users cheap calling rates than the normal telephone calls. The facilities include unlimited PC to phone calling, PC to PC and so on.

6. Internet calls also improve productivity as it ensures excellent voice quality without any latency.

As with many other purchases, there are a number of factors that you should consider to arrive at an informed decision whether Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) service is right for you. To avail a VoIP service, it is necessary for you to have the right equipment. You would need a broadband Internet connection, a modem, telephone equipment and a phone adapter.

VoIP service allows you to place calls over your high-speed Internet connection, leaving your phone lines free for other calls and faxes to come through.

The foremost benefit of having VoIP service is the cost factor. You will end up saving lot money, when compared with traditional phone service. These basic plans usually include 500 minutes per month of talk time anywhere in the US, Canada, and Puerto Rico. They also include features such as voicemail, call waiting, call forwarding, and caller ID. You can typically get unlimited talk time each month including calls to several European countries and you also have the option of keeping your existing phone number. If you seriously contemplating to buy please remember many providers offer the first month of VoIP service free.

Today, more and more businesses unable to cope with exorbitant phone bills are turning to the Internet for their phone service. VoIP services enable businesses to conduct calls across the same network to access the Internet and get email - and at truly negligible cost.

Placing calls over the Internet will drastically reduce long distance costs and it is a chief attraction for many exporters/importers or businessmen who have to frequently call clients located overseas.

Further, in the conventional telephony, multiple phone lines, conference calling features, and long distance charges entail many extra charges. However, most VoIP providers offer unlimited local and long-distance calling for a relatively low flat fee. Because a VoIP exchange is based on software rather than hardware, it is more flexible and easier to maintain. Traditional PABX based phone systems come in different sizes and it will be necessary periodically to scrap existing systems and replace hardware. This is not the case with VoIP systems as they are scalable.

Please remember while deciding to buy that RingCentral has a VoIP offering called DigitalLine, which can be completely integrated into your phone system. This integration is essential for keeping your business interactions, including voice mail messages and call logs, organized.

To those who may be less familiar, call center technology consists of automated phone systems capable of answering incoming phone calls and performing outbound autodialing. A call center is a group of telephone agents who receive incoming calls and/or make outgoing calls. Many call centers are completely automated, processing incoming and outgoing calls without any manual operations. Software applications usually associated with calls centers are CRM (Customer Relationship Management) programs.

Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP) is a call center technology that allows call center to make and receive calls using the Internet instead of traditional phone lines. As a matter of fact, today, many call centers deploy VOIP technology in a bid to reduce costs and improve operational efficiency as also employ remote call center agents. Businesses worldwide have built VOIP into their call centers, because of the scalability, and VOIP enables call centers to adapt and grow along with business and technology needs.

It is the technology of the future as more and more people are enamored of the features of VOIP technology and the concomitant benefits. For many businesses, reduced cost is perhaps the most compelling reason to adopt VOIP in the call centers. VOIP allows organizations to set up core operations in their main office, while operating call centers at many locations across the globe.

Ordinarily, a VOIP call center is a virtual communication warehouse for marketing, and to a lesser extent, customer relationship management (CRM) functions. Using software on your call center's workstations along with a broadband Internet connection can result in significant savings on operational costs. The telephone communications through the Internet allows the VOIP call center staff to initiate and respond to any number of simultaneous telemarketing calls, phone orders, and customer inquiries. Essentially, a VOIP call center centralizes telemarketing, ordering and customer service functions for various manufacturing and service companies.

There are two different choices - one is to make your current equipment -enabled. The other is to build up a new system through a separate gateway. But there are greater gains in having VOIP technology native to your existing call center system. You can use your current equipment by adding a VOIP interface board or similar bridging device to your current system configuration. There are many manufacturers who offer these products.

While exercising this option, buy a product that is certified and capable of easy integration with your existing equipments. Please remember the vendor's commitment to developing VOIP solutions for you is important. If you find it difficult, hire a professional consultant, who has already handled multiple VOIP call center deployments, to guide you through your project.

Since all telephone functions of are computerized, and since the Internet is by far more capable of handling multiple phone transmissions than a Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), a call center need not be unduly bothered about overburdened telephone lines. This is a huge advantage. A number of opportunities are presented once you have your call center on the VOIP technology.

One of the legitimate concerns of the existing and intending subscribers of VOIP phone services is - would there be enough network coverage to justify the switching over to VOIP system as the phone communication is through Internet.

It is a fact that VOIP phone system is a sophisticated alternative to the existing conventional landline telephone services. There are many large, medium and small companies, who provide VOIP services and the market is steadily growing.

It is also true that as the network size continues to increase, so does the demand for VOIP service. Major cities do have better coverage networks for VOIP services than many suburban and rural areas. Of course, the network of coverage keeps steadily increasing allowing for more and more subscribers to take advantage of VOIP networks. There is also no denying that VOIP networks are rapidly becoming as efficient as many of the more traditional phone company networks, and even better organized than several cell phones.

The main pre-requisite critically needed for the functioning of the VOIP system is the broadband internet connection and this has caused much anxiety among users as there is no proper coverage of network. Of course, the fact remains that many VOIP service providers are desperately attempting to expand the network coverage so that maximum VOIP phone services can take advantage.

Due to insufficient network coverage, VOIP service providers are unable to exploit the full market potential. But the technical persons are already on the job to increase the network coverage, which will result in an increase in the demand of VOIP services. As compared to the suburban and rural areas, the network coverage is far more efficient in the cities.

Besides, market surveys suggest that many subscribers are more satisfied with their earlier networks. The different types of problems that the users of VOIP networks encounter are hearing echoes, garbled conversations, and call drops. All these problems have impeded the business growth of many service providers. Unless these problems are solved expeditiously, subscribers may get disillusioned with the performance of VOIP system and go back to conventional systems.

One worthwhile option is to buy a software tool to identify the problem quickly. This software can be searched online and there are many companies that are selling such software. Subscribers must also realize that when accepting a newly developed technology, they should be prepared for both its merits and demerits.

As regards residential VOIP, you have the software for VOIP available online and can easily be downloaded to the computer. Once this is done, the user can communicate with any friends, associates, or family that has the same software. Your phone bills do not and you do not get charged for long distance calls. As you are calling through the computer instead of an old land line, you save a lot of money particularly on long distance costs. From any house with Internet and VOIP, you have the ability to call anyone else with Internet and VOIP, and you need not bother about duration of talk time.

Technology is also evolving at a rapid pace. It is of a very dynamic nature, changing and evolving rapidly, becoming more powerful, more sophisticated and fortunately, more affordable. It’s no wonder then that technology news is never a static field. There’s a new improvement being made every minute, a new product being launched every hour, a new technology being ushered into our lives every day. For those who love science and technology, and also for those who are not so favorable inclined towards it, technology news always has something for everybody.

With the advent of the Internet, and the subsequent proliferation of Internet technologies, online videos have been given a whole new lease of life. This is the age of fast connectivity and super fast data transmission over the Internet. The general experience of watching videos online has improved manifold. Online video services, such as YouTube.com, Google Videos, Metacafe.com and so on are very popular and receive huge amounts of traffic every day.

One of the reasons why people visit these resources in thousands everyday is to view various technology videos, especially new technology videos. Of course one can read about them in various blogs and news sites. But getting to see the technology in action is a different experience altogether. After all, a picture is worth a thousand words. Product demos are very popular in this respect. Whenever a new product is made available to the public, or the launch of one is announced, people everywhere get inquisitive about it. They wish to learn more about this new offering and also wish to know more about the technology involved, its features, its benefits, etc. Fortunately, the Internet carries many videos that showcase these products. They help in providing a sneak preview of an unreleased product or a video review of a popular one to help prospective buyers take the right decision about buying the product.

It is said, ‘If everything else fails, Google it!’ Well, in other words, it implies that there’s nothing that you can’t find if you search for it on the Internet. The same goes for technology videos too. Search and thou shalt find it.

Small wonder that technology videos, a more recent manner of disseminating technology news, are a popular marketing tool of most companies selling gadgetry and/or technologies. Then there is the deteriorating attention span of readers/viewers - another factor that makes videos a more attractive marketing option. Who wants to plod through the yellow pages or through small print technology news? Who wants a fact file in a droning monotone, accompanied by still shots of the product in a powerpoint presentation? Avail, instead, the instant information provided by a technology video.

Take, for example, Digital TV. Demonstration of how that particular technology works, through a technology video, leaves no room for doubt. People are assured that what they see is what they get and will line up to choose Digital TV over every other sort. The video can further offer comparisons and help the consumer choose to his advantage. Also, remember the old adage – you hear, you forget; you see, you remember? Technology videos probably act on this principle.

Technology news can be pretty dry and incomprehensible if served in the conventional manner. Packing in all the features of a product in the limited space often does not do justice to the product. It can be a daunting task for the page creator and equally so for the reader. It puts him off before he reaches the bottom of the page, whereas a lively video will have you wanting to see more. Moreover, it is difficult for the prospective buyer to translate, say, Intel XXXX into what he will actually get in terms of everyday operations. A video offers a clear picture, literally.

A short video film, strategically embedded in various related web sites is just the thing to boost sales and to differentiate your product from the others. A single click takes the prospect through 2 minutes of intensive watching, hearing and reading and he most likely comes away mesmerized and converted. Technology videos are definitely on!

WiMAX technology offers wireless data in a related form as compare to WiFi but its level and speed allow to build hybrid and wireless networks, of any size, anywhere. It is formed to encourage conformance and interoperability of Wireless Metropolitan Area Network. WiMAX offers a consistent technology according to its standard. WiMAX technology open could let product manufacturers make revenues of scale via producing number of WiMAX products & components to single IEEE 802.16 standard, this also allow component manufacturers buy low-cost, standards compliant components from rival component providers. This would definitely help existing wireless service providers.

WiMAX technology will offer high data speed network connections and in this manner serve as a backhaul for WiFi LAN (WLAN) hot spots, where people on the move can access carriers' WiFi services on mobile technology basis, because this technology allows interoperability among different systems. And service providers lacking a mobile network can use a WiMAX technology network at comparatively low price. WiMAX technology possibly will offer a much cheaper, easier to build network infrastructure other than the physical medium of WiFi backhauls that cable, T1 or DSL systems presently offer.

Because WiMAX is based on IEEE 802.16 Standard and HiperMAN, the IEEE and ETSI have each become accustomed it's standard to take in many of the other's essential characteristics. IEEE 802.16 standard partitioned its MAC (Medium Access Control) layer into sub-layers that hold some different transport equipments and technologies, together with Ethernet, IPv4, IPv6 and other asynchronous transfer mode. This allows traders to use WiMAX technology and no matter what technology they support for transmission. WiMAX technology has a wide communication range up to 50 kilometers because principles allows WiMAX network to transfer data at higher rates and because of this move towards use of directional antennas that generates persistent radio signals. WiMAX base station provide service to only 500 users at a time not more than that just because to they are sharing bandwidthand this factor may cause lower date rates among. Technically every single station will possibly provide communication an area inside a 10 miles radius. To compare WiFi with WiMAX technology the last has a range of few thousand feet. while WiFi has a range of only a few hundred feet.

Moreover WiMAX network broadcasts data communication over several broad signal frequency ranges. And this exceptional capacity to work in several ranges allows to communicate above the frequencies that will evade interference with other wireless network applications. Also the flexibility of this system's communication allows providers to employ different frequencies that depend on the speed and range needed for a particular data communication. Amplifying data capacity and bandwidth via dividing broad capacity channels to many narrowband channels, the WiMAX technology attains higher data transmission rates in part by OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing).Every channel uses different frequencies that can transmit different pieces of a message at the same time.

One of the important advantages of data transmission is that the channels do not overlap, in spite of the fact that the spaces between channels are extremely close. The primary IEEE 802.16 standard uses the 10 to 66 GHz frequency range And it is very suitable because this frequency range shrinks the multi path distortion that arises when transmitting signals that do not follow the line of sight echoed items and finish off out of sink, thus jumbling the inbound communication and reducing bandwidth.

In theory WiMAX network can offer single channel data rates up to 75 Mbits/s equally on the downlink and uplink. Service providers can use several 802.16 channels for single broadcast to offer bandwidths of up to 350 Mb per second.

Third generation mobile network technologies will support around 115 Kbps. The accepted IEEE 802.11b WiFi WLAN technology data rate are limited to 11Mbps, on the other hand newer 802.11a and 802.11g provide up to 54Mbps in favorable conditions but practically all of the them transmit at lesser speed.

Nowadays, the flourishing of Internet is ubiquitously in the world! There are now more and more companies who are taking on board the idea of starting a domain reseller business; however due to this increase in reseller businesses the aspect of running a successful domain registration business has become more difficult due to an increase in competition. Running a successful domain registration business using a reseller programme takes strategic planning and the offer of a high quality service as well as a fresh approach to creativity. You should try and think outside of the box so that your domain reseller business offers something more than average to its customers. By doing this you will rise above the thousands of resellers who are already crowding the reseller market.

If you are a business who is hoping to become a reseller then one of the most important aspects is choosing a domain name registrar. When doing this the best route to success is to choose a registrar that has been approved by the Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). Choosing an approved firm is important due to the fact that they have been authorised to create and sell domain names directly. So choosing a registrar that has not been approved by ICANN is not advised as you would end up essentially reselling the domains of a reseller, a redundant step in the registration process that will typically cost you more.

In most domain reseller programmes the reseller is provided with a user interface through which they may register, renew, and transfer domain names using the registrar's own system, which eases the process and allows the reseller complete control over all aspects of the domain.

Domain reseller programmes act as the perfect flexible hosting solution, especially if you have a large number of sites, which are all under your control. If doesn’t matter if you are a web designer or a small or medium business or even a large scale personal user, a reseller domain/web hosting company could be the answer that you are looking for.

By using a reseller programme you are in fact choosing to keep costs at a minimum as all of your customer’s domains are hosted on the reseller’s servers meaning that you do not have to invest large amounts of money into setting up the necessary hardware or software. Using a domain reseller also means there are no ongoing maintenance costs as you do not need to maintain and replace your own servers. This will allow you to increase your profits to a higher level.

If you are interested in either starting up your own domain reseller business or you are hoping to enlist the help of an established domain reseller then it is important that you look around before settling on a domain reseller as this way you will get the best possible deal for your website.

In the present scenario, technology has made enormous amends, as well as played an imperative role in changing yesterday’s world into the most recent high-tech world. You can go through various online to avail the best and profitable broadband deals.

The popularity of satellite radio is growing each year and for good reason. From the convenience of being able to listen to a favorite station from virtually anywhere without interruption and excellent sound quality to the wide variety of programming and less frequent commercial interruptions, the service is well worth the low monthly fee for many individuals.

For those who want more entertainment than what traditional radio or their own private music collection can offer, the question that arises is not whether or not satellite radio is a good choice but how to get the service started.

• Clearly, the first step in getting started with satellite radio is to select the service. While Europe has WorldSpace, the US uses two providers; Sirius and XM Radio. Both offer well over 160 channels of listening that is virtually commercial free. Pricing for both is in the neighborhood of $13 per month plus the cost of receivers and a small one time activation fee. Potential buyers can easily research the available programming through both Sirius and XM Radio via their respective websites and determine which subscription plan will meet their entertainment needs.

For those who would prefer a side by side comparison of the two services a simple search on Google for "Sirius vs. XM" will reveal numerous sites that provide a current "at-a-glance" comparison of the two satellite radio providers.

• Once the choice is made, equipment will be necessary as a satellite radio receiver will be required. This could include a home receiver, car stereo, plug-and-play type device for use in both the home and car, or perhaps a small personal listening device. This equipment can be available through many reputable home electronics stores as well as directly through Sirius or XM Radio.

• Any necessary installation of receivers in a car or boat can be done professionally or as a do-it-yourself task. Sirius for instance provides detailed, simple written instructions for installation via their site; Sirius.com as well as a video demonstration of installation.

• After the installation of any receivers, another visit online, or by telephone, allows new customers to activate the satellite radio service for the subscription plan selected.

Obviously, getting started with satellite radio is not a complex process nor does it entail an exorbitant ongoing expense. Opening up the broader world of excellent radio entertainment is only a few mouse clicks away from reality for the listening public.

It's been many generations now since radio was born. A crackling signal carrying serial dramas and comedies, news, and live concerts entered the living rooms of families across the globe in the early days. Later, the enjoyment of music and talk could be enjoyed on portable transistor and car radios as people went about their business or at least until the weather or distance eliminated the signal.

Over the years however, radio started to fade as an entertainment medium as crystal clear digital music offered front row type listening for music lovers with portable CD, DVD, and MP3 players for their home and travels; no commercials to interrupt the enjoyment and no fading signal. As the tastes of listeners expanded, a dozen or so receivable stations could no longer deliver the diversity of programming that was desired. For some, the regulations of the FCC also quelled some of the "edgier" entertainment that they craved.

Although the uninterrupted, superior audio quality of pre-recorded music has drawn many away from radio listening, the depth of the entertainment experience can be lacking. Switching to a news or weather broadcast for updates, taking in an in depth discussion on a topic of interest, or enjoying a good laugh with a favorite show simply isn't part of the experience. Discovering new artists or favorite genres is also less likely unless a friend shares something new.

More recently however, listeners who desire better quality audio and uninterrupted entertainment no longer have to forgo the broader entertainment experience offered by radio. With the emergence of satellite radio, new life has been breathed into the old medium.

Because satellite radio is broadcast by communications satellite, the reach of the signal is not limited by station power; the channel can be heard virtually anywhere. As a result, listeners in their car can travel across the continent and continue listening to the same station uninterrupted.

Satellite radio also offers higher sound quality than traditional radio broadcasts. Static, fading, and signal breakup are virtually eliminated. In addition, with many commercial free stations and programming, listeners are often left to enjoy their chosen entertainment interruption free.

For many listeners, satellite radio also provides entertainment that is unavailable through any other medium. Free from many of the regulations that limit traditional radio broadcasts and having a diversity of programming that encompasses almost every genre imaginable, there is generally something for everyone on satellite radio. As a result, listeners are able to completely immerse themselves in a preferred genre or to easily discover new favorites.

For many listeners who have experienced satellite radio, the enhanced features make the small monthly fee for the service well worth it. Certainly it offers a broader and potentially higher quality entertainment experience than its predecessor which makes it worthy of a look by those who haven't yet experienced this newer version of radio.

Picture feature is measured in scan lines. The increased scan lines that are transmitted to your TV, the clearer the picture.

For instance, analog (over-the-air) TV has 525 scan lines per image. HDTV, on the other hand, has up to 1,080 lines per image -- almost twice as many lines of resolution giving you twice the exactness of analog TV.

There's a mighty heterogeneity between watching TV on a traditional TV set as opposed to watching an HD TV. The HD picture is sharper and the colors are brighter. The picture is so pleasant it's almost like watching a scene through a window.

HD Satellite TV Features

Here are the supreme features of HD satellite TV:

* Excessive resolution picture -- HDTV produces a super-sharp image, resulting in a clearer, increased lifelike picture.

* Widescreen picture -- you get a full-width picture just like you see in the movies.

* Digital audio -- HD audio programming is broadcast Dolby Digital format so you get a three-dimensional surround-sound listening experience.

HD Satellite TV Providers

Both DISH Network and DIRECTV offer HD programming. Here's a rundown on their HD satellite TV channel lineups ...

DISH Network HD Satellite TV

Simple Definition of Digital Video

Using the simplest definition, digital video is the representation or encoding of an analog video signals in digital bits for storage, transmission, and/or display. If you have rented a DVD, watched digital cable, DirecTV, or Dish, played a video game, then you have experienced digital video.

The Encoding Process

An important component in digital video is the pixel, or picture element, which represents the color in bits. The color is a blend of red, green, and blue and is represented in bits. The number of bits is termed the bit-depth (and is usually 8, 10, or 16-bits per component). More bits allow a more precise representation of hue from the red, green and blue colors. Graphics are usually represented in RGB (red-green-blue) format, and TV video is usually represented as Y’CbCr, where Y’ is the luminance (or brightness) and CbCr represent the color (pure color with no brightness).

Video is basically a three-dimensional array of color pixels. Two dimensions serve as spatial (horizontal and vertical) directions, and one dimension represents the temporal (time) domain. A frame is a set of all pixels that correspond to a single point in time. Basically, a frame is the same as a still picture.

The number of pixels defines the spatial resolution. Standard television is displayed with 720x480 at 30Hz (576 at 25Hz for PAL) resolution. High Definition television is usually defined as 1280x720 at 60Hz (720P) or 1920x1080 at 30Hz (1080i). This means that standard definition requires 720*480*30fps*24color-bits = 250Mb/s. HDTV is 6 times more data. Thus, the data must be compressed.

Video sequences contain spatial and temporal redundancy. Similarities can thus be encoded by merely registering differences within a frame (spatial) and/or between frames (temporal). Spatial encoding is performed by taking advantage of the fact that the human eye is unable to distinguish small differences in color as easily as it can changes in brightness and so very similar areas of color can be "averaged out". With temporal compression only the changes from one frame to the next are encoded as often a large number of the pixels will be the same on a series of frames (About video compression).

The Decoding (Displaying) Process

Once the video is created, stored, and transmitted, a computer process must open the video and display the original video. This is termed a video decoder. It reads the encoded video file, decompresses and displays it.

The video data must be played in the correct order, with little or no packet loss, and with smooth, continuous timing or essential information will be missing. To ensure video quality, networking companies must provide a good transport mechanism, encoders must produce good picture quality, and the decoder must do a good just of displaying and compensating for errors.

Video Encoding Standards

MPEG-1 (ISO/IEC 11172)

The first digital video encoding standard was developed by the Moving Pictures Experts Groups and was termed MPEG-1. It was adopted in 1992 and provided VHS quality digital video for CD-ROM playback.

MPEG-1 employs intra-frame spatial compression on redundant color values using discrete cosine transforms (DCTs). The DCT is then further reduced by quantizing (basically reducing the scale) and converting 4:4:4 RGB data to 4:2:0 Y’CbCr, which reduces the amount of color information from 24-bits to 12-bits.

MPEG-1 relies on prediction, or more precisely motion-compensated prediction, for temporal compression between frames. It uses 3 frames to create temporal compression:

• I frames
• B frames
• P frames

An I-frame has no reference to the past or future frames. P-frames are forward predicted frames with reference to previous I or P frames. B-frames are encoded with reference to previous and future I, P, or B frames. The smaller number of I frames compared to P and B frames reduces bit-rate even further.

MPEG-2 (ISO/IEC 13818-2)

MPEG-2 was designed to encompass, and to be backward compatible with MPEG-1. It includes support for interlaced video for broadcast TV.
A television broadcast frame is created with two separate fields, a top and bottom interlaced field, with the first line of the bottom field appearing immediately after the first line of the top field. Thus, 30 frames-per-second is actually sent as 60 fields-per-second.

In addition, MPEG-2 includes improved color-sub-sampling, error correction, and improved audio support.

MPEG-3
MPEG-3 was designed for high definition television (HDTV), but the MPEG-2 standard scaled to encompass the requirements so this initiative was withdrawn.

MPEG-4 (ISO/IEC 14496)

MPEG-4 arose from the need to have scalable support for low bit rate applications – streaming over the Internet – and the need for better compression at higher resolutions.

This paper explores the challenges Broadcasters face when assessing video quality. Many factors affect the video before it gets to the TV: compression, image processing, scaling, decoding, transmission, etc.

Video processing and compression algorithms change the characteristics of the original program in the quest of reducing the bandwidth needed to send the programming information to the home. The art is to do this without allowing the audience to perceive a change in video quality. Successful video processing and compression algorithms perform the desired modifications while presenting a result to the viewer that, subjectively, looks natural and realistic. This sounds difficult, but it is necessary when transmitting many channels of high-quality programming.

Each broadcaster - traditional or web caster - must deal with rapidly changing varieties of programming, new video processing algorithms, and new compression algorithms. Video processing and compression companies continuously invent sophisticated ways to reduce the huge bandwidth requirements to manageable levels. How can broadcasters know if a new algorithm is better than their current choice?

Broadcasters invite the various video processing and compression companies into their R&D facilities, and perform side-by-side tests also known as a "bake-off". Each vendor starts with the same source material, and does their best to reduce the bandwidth while keeping the video quality high.

The broadcaster shows the results to a group of experts and asks them, which one is the best. This is termed subjective video analysis, and it measures the overall perceived video quality. The most commonly used video quality evaluation method is the Mean Opinion Score (MOS), recommended by the ITU. It consists in having several experts viewing a known distorted video sequences in order to rate its quality, according to a predefined quality scale. By doing this the expert viewers are trained to build a mapping between the quality scale and a set of processed video sequences. After the “training” is complete, the subjects are then asked to rate the new video processing algorithms.

Simply stated, the test setup is

• Start with a known video sequence.
• New Video Processing system alters the video sequence.
• Display the original and processed video sequences.
• Bring in experts to subjectively vote.

Complexity arises as

• New Video Processing systems may need new equipment to playback the video sequences.
• The original and processed video sequences should be displayed in random orders.
• Expert viewers are expensive and do not produce repeatable results.

Easier Solution

To streamline the process, equipment for video quality testing needs to be defined, which can capture, play, and analyze any two video sequences. Further, as new input/output modules are continuously under development, the test equipment should use an open-architecture approach to ease upgradeability.

The following are the key attributes of a robust video quality testing tools.

• Allow a way to import video sequences regardless of their file type – i.e. AVI, QuickTime, Raw, Video Editor, MPEG, etc.
• Serve video sequences to the encoder and/or video processing unit using SDI, Component, DVB-ASI or DVI.
• Capture the output of the encoder or the encoder/decoder pair.
• Convert all video sequences to user-selectable resolution, bit depth, and color format so that they can be displayed multiple viewing modes on the same display.
• Support 8 and 10-bit data paths with upgradeability to future 16-bit modes.
• Store the video sequences as frames (fields) so that they can be played at any rate.
• Allow multiple playing modes such as play, shuttle, jog, pause, zoom and pan.
• Apply objective metrics to the video sequences to score the video frame-by-frame, and log/graph the results for easy analysis.
• Export pieces of video sequences to further analyze off-line.

To isolate their video algorithm, companies perform verification using: subjective and objective video assessment techniques.

• Subjective assessment consists of bringing a group of experts into a room, and asking them which videos they like better. This is time consuming and costly.

• Objective testing requires an algorithm, which models the results of the video experts surveyed above.

While it would be far cheaper, to perform only objective test, nothing beats the human eye. Thus, Objective video quality measurements and Subjective video quality assessment are complementary rather than interchangeable. Subjective assessment is appropriate for research related purposes; objective measurements are required for equipment specifications, QA testing, and monitoring.

Problem Statement

When dealing with equipment to process TV & video transmissions, every design depends on accurate, repeatable measurements. A complex relationship between objective parameter measurements and subjective video quality exists. The goal is to achieve an objective metric; that is an automated measurement. All of the equipment must be tested from video processors, compression units, transmission gear, set-top boxes, and displays. The evaluation of the video quality and ultimately, the customer’s reaction to the picture shown on their new HDTV drives the business.

Previous Options

For years, traditional techniques that looked at color, brightness, contrast, etc. were effective. However, the advent of compressed digital video transmission has complicated the process of evaluating video sequences, with respect to perceived picture quality. During compression, a certain amount of the original content is knowingly discarded. Visible impairments such as “blockiness” and Gaussian noise are by-products. Traditional measurement techniques that look at color, brightness, contrast, etc. are no longer effective.

Objective Measurement Status

After analyzing the subjective results, considerable work has been done to come up with a quantifiable, repeatable measurement which is not dependent on the video sequence. To date, objective measurements have not proven to estimate the user’s opinion. To introduce and qualify new algorithms, Video Quality Experts Group (VQEG) was formed in 1997, and generally acts in cooperation with ITU. VQEG has conducted two phases of testing; in the first phase ten algorithms were tested, and the conclusion reached was that all of them were statistically equivalent. A second phase of testing, conducted several years later, involved a smaller set of algorithms, more controlled video sequences, and a better defined test environment. The result of the second phases warranted the recent ITU-T Recommendation J.144.

Three basic types of objective video assessment metrics exist:

• Full Reference – A method that conducts a comparison of video source to resultant.

• Reduced Reference – A method that conducts a comparison of a reduced video source to a full result.

• No Reference – A method when there is no reference.

The three methods have different applications, and they provide different degrees of measurement accuracy, expressed in terms of correlation with subjective assessment results.

The work to date has centered on full reference algorithms. Full reference algorithms perform a detailed comparison of the input and output video sequence. This is a computationally intensive process, which involves per-pixel processing, and temporal, spatial alignment of the input and output streams. Full reference algorithms can achieve good levels of correlation with subjective test data. Having the reference video sequence available is only possible for certain applications: for example in lab testing, pre-deployment test or troubleshooting.

One of the earliest full reference algorithms is PSNR (Peak Signal to Noise Ratio), which is literally a measurement of the mean error between input and output as a ratio of the peak signal level, expressed in dB. A typical “good” PSNR is around 30dB and it is generally accepted that PSNR values of less than 18dB are unacceptable. PSNR is the most widely used technique for image and video quality measurement.

A wide range of full reference algorithms have been developed including: MPQM (Moving Pictures Quality Metric - 1996) from EPFL in Switzerland, the US Government NTIA ITS lab’s VQM (Video Quality Metric – 1999), Sarnoff’s JND (Just Noticeable Differences), and Wang’s SSIM ('Structural SIMilarity). ITU-T J.144 does not actually specify a single algorithm but “provides guidelines on the selection of appropriate” techniques. J.144 does contain descriptions and test results for four full reference algorithms. The VQM algorithm from the US Government’s NTIA ITS lab achieved slightly better performance than the other algorithms listed.

People find it cool to watch satellite TV on PC. Since a few years back, people have been able to watch satellite TV on PC using the PCTV cards. PCTV cards are basically hardware cards used to receive satellite TV channels. They are either plugged as an external device into your USB port or implanted directly onto your motherboard in your computer.

These cards are not cheap and can range from $150 to $400 for a decent functioning card. Nowadays, with PC satellite TV software, it has replaced this old method to watch satellite TV on PC. How to Save Money with VOIP Phone features

Posted by Asif Wednesday, August 18, 2010 0 comments

The writing on the wall is clear for all to see that VOIP telephone services and IP telephony are emerging globally as the latest technology in communications. Many large companies are switching over to VOIP telephone systems to interact more regularly with international customers without the need to pay extra long-distance cost.

The benefits of VOIP system is not only for business owners. Many personal users of VOIP telephone are finding it less expensive to be in contact with their family and friends living in distant lands.

It is incredible that you can use VOIP anywhere in the world and still pay negligible rates or possibly pay no money at all, for long distance phone calls. Incoming calls can be automatically forwarded to your VOIP phone, regardless of where you are - as long as there is broadband connection.

This makes the VOIP phone system both flexible and portable. The VOIP telephone is certainly the communication technology of the future, enabling the user to talk to people all over the world with no restriction of talk time and paying in most cases, no money.

The added costs of features and services can take its toll on a business owner's monthly budget.

Please know many VoIP providers offer discounts to business enterprises and give them access to several useful features. You are not required to pay extra money for features like - three way conferencing, call waiting, caller id and few other such features. Verify whether your VoIP service has these features already built into the phone package. Most business owners will find these features extremely useful for maintaining more effective customer interaction.

Now you can afford to provide every employee with a personal number. Having multiple extensions for customer communication will hardly cost you anything with VoIP services. Standard land line phone services will charge phenomenal fees for these types of separate extensions. No employee will be required to change a phone number because of any shift in his or her position. Just connect the phone device to a high speed Internet connection and the communication can start straightaway.

Here is an added facility that will save money because most VoIP providers will allow you to use your existing phone equipment with a phone adapter. Yet another useful function provided by VoIP providers is the capability to use a software client on a desktop or notebook computer. Just plug in your headphones and your communication facility is in place.

Now you can get rid of all paid fax or voicemail services. Many VoIP providers will let subscribers have instant access to voicemail messages and faxes without having to pay extra. You will be able to conveniently have access to these tools without inflating the expenses.

Using VoIP services for contacting customers has the added benefit. You can available to your customers at any time of the day or night. Most VoIP providers also provide you the opportunity to program in a manner your phones ring in multiple devices simultaneously before going to voicemail. This will ensure you do not miss any important customer call.

There can be little doubt that VOIP telephone technology is on its way to becoming the future communications technology of the world and it will offer even more capabilities to the business enterprises in times ahead.

With markets, suppliers, customers and even colleagues spread around the globe, physical meetings with suppliers and customers or even colleagues are more vital than ever.

Outsourcing is at an all time high and fast, easy, communication with such suppliers has become essential. However the distances and frequency and involved make meetings impractical or impossible.

The Benefits of Video Conferencing

Collaboration. Teamwork has never been more important or challenging. With teams and communities becoming more and more so geographically and culturally disparate, effective face to face communication has never been more essential.

Knowledge transfer. Making decisions based on the expertise of key members of staff, on an ad-hoc basis is key to delivering business.

Accessibility. Immediate and complete information access is no longer an advantage, but a requirement. Next-gen users expect information and resources to be there when they need them, where they need them.

Reducing costs. The actual cost of physical meeting – both in time and in cost an accommodation is rapidly becoming unsustainable.

Video conferencing allows businesses to address these issues and more. The ability for communication between remote members of staff, as frequently as needed, along with the costs savings associated with less business travel are all benefits that users of Video Conferencing are benefitting from.

Video Conferencing is available to all businesses with little set up costs, no demands on the IT infrastructure and bandwidth and an increase in productivity, ideal for times when money might be tight.

Business is changing – the video revolution has changed video conferencing.

In compiling the Dish-Network-Directory,my main aim was to gather all the latest and up-to-date Dish Network Satellite TV information in one place.

But I also found that I was able to find some interesting comparisons between Dish Network and Cable TV. Sometimes when making a comparison it’s easy to come up with either technical reasons or financial reasons why one thing might be better than another, but in this case I found that Dish Network came out on top on both fronts.

It takes a long to time to research a market, particularly when there are many competing offers, but comparing Dish Network and Cable can be made easier by looking at long-term trends. These show firstly that Dish Network take-up is growing in terms of market share, whilst cable is falling. Secondly that the cost of cable is increasing whilst Dish Network prices are stable. I say stable, but in real terms they are falling because of the additional equipment you can get for the same cost. And it’s not as if you have to buy the equipment either, you get the complete basic setup for free and additional features or duplicate equipment can be obtained at a nominal one-off fee.

So let’s look at equipment first. The Dish Network equipment portfolio is increasing all the time. This is because of the proliferation of HD (High Definition) TV and the equipment to record it – HD DVR. This brings about our next comparison point; Dish Network provides a 100% digital service plus the availability of HDTV. Cable on the other hand provides only a percentage of digital services with more limited HDTV. This is an important difference since digital channels are what you need for quality reception, with the ability of the digital service to remove interference or bad quality before you see it on the screen. HDTV then goes one step further by giving the best possible picture quality – essential if you want to view on a large TV. Cable is three or four times more susceptible to breaks in transmission, an important factor that is often overlooked.

Now to look at programming, it doesn’t take you long to notice that Dish Network Satellite TV provides more channels than cable, and the availability of channels is increasing all the time. The best deals from retailers usually include rebates on programming as well as some months of free movie reception- at least this means you can try before you buy.

Just as important as quality and variety of course is the cost. Well this is where Dish Network Satellite TV wins hands down. Dish Network channel packages are significantly cheaper – even before you factor in the initial rebates you get with most deals. When you buy Dish Network, you know that you are buying something that is forward-looking in regard to the HD channel availability and equipment. Basic Dish Network programming packages now come in at $19.99 per month against $50-plus for cable.

In summary then, cable can’t compete with Dish Network, either in terms of cost or the quality and variety of equipment on offer.

It is expect that nearly every household in the United States has at least one radio. The invention of the radio was dependent upon two previous discoveries: the electromagnet and telegraph.

The electromagnet was discovered in 1825. This discovery opened the doors to global communication! Five years later, Joseph Henry successfully transmitted an electric current via wire which was stretched over a mile and which caused an electromagnet to trigger the sounding of a bell. Thus, the electric telegraph was born.

One of the most recognizable names associated with the telegraph is Samuel Morse who is most notable for the series of dots (brief sound) and dashes (more sustained sound) which was used to transmit messages by alphabet code (thus known as Morse Code). Telegraph became the sole means of rapid long distance communication until 1877 and the invention of the telephone.

Batteries are interesting, aren`t they? Used by the general consumer, they are small, but powerfully packed instruments which produce power used for many cameras, alarm clocks, radios, and other devices. What makes this power production possible? In the case of the telephone and it`s early design and use, batteries produced the essential source of power for the electromagnet.

Batteries have two ends to which one is assigned a `+` or positive, and the other a `-` or negative. When a battery operated device is switched on, the electrons which are produced by the batteries, quickly move from the negative side to the positive side of the batteries. Something was needed to interrupt this rapid flow of electrons or find the batteries totally expended in a brief time.

In order to accomplish this, a wire is often inserted between the positive and negative terminals and a `load`, such as a radio, creating a small magnetic field in the wire. The electromagnetic waves which are present now, have the capability to transmit sounds (speech, music, and so on) as well as visual images undetected by sight through the air.

There are several scientists who must be mentioned as essential to the telephone as it is known to most of us. Mahlon Loomis created wireless telegraph. Guglielmo Marconi, proved the possibility of radio communication. In 1985 Marconi, transmitted and received a radio signal. Using the Morse alphabet, he sent the first wireless signal which was transmitted across the English Channel and in due time, he was able to receive the Morse letter S which began in England and reached Newfoundland which became the beginning of transatlantic radiotelegraphy (1902).

Wireless signals gained far reaching use as a means of communication for rescue work when an accident or disaster occurred at sea. In 1899 the United States Army began utilize wireless communication which originated from a lightship off Fire Island. The US Navy was about two years behind the Army in utilizing wireless telegraphy.

In 1903, President Roosevelt (Theodore) and King Edward VII communicated via this new and improving technology. The well known Robert Perry, using radiotelegraphy, conveyed the message that he had `found the Pole`.

The first AM radio entered the world of telecommunication in the early 1900`s. This device made the use of somewhat weak waves possible for communication. This was the time when the term `radio`, as we know today for radio devices, began to be used.

It is believed that in December 23, 1900, professor Reginald Aubrey Fessenden was the first person to successfully transmit human voice by radio waves. By 1915, speech was first sent across the United States beginning in New York City and sent to San Francisco. Somewhat later, transmission occurred across the Atlantic Ocean from Arlington, Virginia, to Paris at the Eiffel Tower.

It is truly fascinating all the scientists and the physics theories that led to the invention of the radio. Marconi, Alexander Popov, Oliver Lodge, Fessenden and many others, have all made important contributions to an invention that made the world so different, that most likely none of them would envision. The radio era was born.

To those who are still unfamiliar VOIP is an acronym for Voice over Internet Protocol, or simply phone service using the Internet. VoIP users can save a lot of money, apart from enjoying a host of other benefits.

Whereas the traditional phone system transmits voice over wires and fibers, VoIP transmits voice in digital form. The process is not difficult to understand. In the traditional phone system, once you dial a number, the connection between the two ends is established by means of a wire. The farther away the person you called, the longer the wire, the higher the cost.

In contrast, VoIP sends voice over an IP based network. The data packets are fragmented into pieces and transmitted to the receiver, where the data packets are reassembled back in order. Since the data connection is through the Internet, there is one fixed cost for all phone calls regardless of distances. There are three different ways to avail the VOIP facility:

1. VoIP facility can be had through an Analog Telephone Adaptor (ATA). This adaptor would hook up to your phone, which in turn, is hooked up to your computer and Internet. The adaptor will enable turning the analog signal into a digital signal.

2. VoIP facility can be had through an IP phone. The IP phone resembles a regular phone except that it has an Ethernet cable connector instead of a phone jack. The Ethernet cable can be plugged right into a router, eliminating the need for a computer.

3. One more way to use VoIP is computer to computer. This will eliminate the need for a VoIP service provider and the software required can be freely downloaded from the Internet. Lot of money can be saved as the only cost payable is the monthly Internet fee.

It may be noted that unlike the traditional landlines phone, VoIP does not use PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network). Instead, VoIP uses packet switching, which means the two communicating parties are connected only when a packet is being transmitted. This allows the packets to travel the most efficient path without any dedicated line.

Apart from considerable cost savings, VoIP has a host of features. It also allows portability as you can carry your phone and use it wherever there is a broadband Internet connection. VOIP is revolutionizing the world of telecommunications and most business enterprises are abandoning their traditional system in favor of VoIP. VoIP is becoming increasingly popular and it is being widely acclaimed as the technology of the future.

Most news outlets are now using video to report their news stories in its place of print. If you want a live webcast network, it is comparatively easy to do. You can merely get a digital camcorder and film your internet webcast. Then you can download the video into the computer and even exhibit it free on areas like You Tube as well as a number of other outlets. You can even use a free web casting to encourage a product or conduct an online seminar. Some people use this technology to educate a class. More and more colleges are using this technology to educate definite classes so that students can learn from their computers. This is the wave of the future and as camcorder prices have reached an all time low down, as have computers, we can expect additional video stars to come out of the woodwork.

In order to create a live web cast, you primarily need a script. You should also perform the script several times before filming. You want to make certain that it looks professional. While you may not desire to look stiff and rehearsed, you also do not want to be doubtful over words with "uh" and "um" every few seconds because it will turn off a viewer. You should have the camera on a tripod or some other still area. Someone holding it and filming you is going to give you insecure images and make your viewers faint. The camera should be motionless. Backgrounds should be nonaligned and background noise non existent.

There are sound stages that you can hire or you can make your own. You want the webcast to look expert. Unless it is part of the video, noise and other distractions should be avoided. Get yourself some good video editing software. This can help you really get rid of any sound or any other problems with the video. Video editing software is a necessity if you are going to do your own live web casts in the future. You will get back the cost of the software in no time flat, especially if you are paying someone to edit your film.
A live webcast can be used just about anyplace on the internet. Anyplace you can put text, you can put film. You can exploit it on your website to advance your product, you can put it on free video sites such as YouTube for self promotion or you can also use it as an instruction tool.

It stores like text and is trouble-free to use. Video editing software is not costly and is, for the most part, user friendly. You no longer have to be a computer expert to live webcast on the internet. And there are so many different things you can use the videos to encourage, even yourself. Just get your script prepared and away you go.
